The Blood in Your Battery: The Human Cost of the Green Revolution
Our “clean” future is being dug by the broken fingernails of children in the Congo.
Muntosh was six years old when he watched the earth swallow his brother.
They were in the Lualaba province, southwest of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), standing near a hand-dug artisanal pit. In a heartbeat, the rain-soaked earth slipped, a landslide burying his brother beneath tons of toxic red mud. Muntosh was in the first grade. He didn’t get to go back to school to mourn; his family needed the $2 he could earn by sieving cobalt from the dirt.
By age twelve, Muntosh’s body has prematurely aged. He speaks of a “large block of cobalt” he once hauled from a hole, an act of physical desperation that left him with chronic, agonizing pain that haunts his every movement today. He is just one of the 40,000 children currently used as disposable tools to power the world’s transition to “clean” energy.
The Math of Misery
We are told that the transition to electric vehicles (EVs) is the moral imperative of our century. But in the DRC, the math of this revolution is written in blood.
The energy density of a lithium-ion battery is measured in watt-hours per kilogram. In Silicon Valley, this is a metric of progress. In the DRC, the metric is different: 70% of the world’s cobalt comes from the Congo, and 70% of Congolese citizens live on less than $2.15 a day.
While tech giants boast of trillion-dollar valuations, fifteen-year-old Mishiki Nshokano is the primary breadwinner for his family. After his father was killed in a 2022 mining accident, Mishiki—then only eleven—abandoned his fourth-year primary studies. He now spends twelve hours a day transporting heavy loads of ore for roughly $4, a “premium” wage for a child, paid to ensure your smartphone’s battery doesn’t degrade.
The Corporate Veil of “Clean” Energy
Who is buying this? The supply chain is a deliberate labyrinth designed to sanitize the origin of the ore.
The Extraction: Artisanal miners (ASM) dig in unstable, claustrophobic shafts with chisels and bare feet.
The Laundering: This “dirty” ore is sold at informal trading houses where it is mixed with industrial ore.
The Refiners: Chinese giants like CMOC Group and Huayou Cobalt control roughly 80% of the world’s cobalt refining.
The Titans: The refined cobalt flows into the batteries of CATL, Panasonic, and LG Energy Solution, ultimately powering products from Apple, Tesla, Samsung, Google, and Ford.
In March 2026, a massive tunnel collapse at the Kasasa mining site resulted in 200 fatalities, including 70 children. Not a single global tech company could “confirm” if their minerals were sourced from that specific pit. Plausible deniability is the most profitable commodity in the DRC.
The Health of a “Green” Future
The toll is not just physical; it is biological. Children like seven-year-old Lusala work waist-deep in acidic water, sieving mud for fragments of “the green stone.”
Hard Metal Lung Disease: Inhaling cobalt dust leads to permanent respiratory failure.
Systemic Poisoning: Children’s developing enzyme systems are unable to detoxify the heavy metals they absorb through their skin and lungs.
Physical Deformity: Carrying 30kg sacks of ore before the spine has fully fused leads to permanent skeletal distortion.
How We Demand Accountability
We cannot simply “exit” the DRC; a total boycott would leave families like Muntosh’s to starve. Instead, we must demand a Just Transition.
Mandatory Due Diligence: We must support laws like the EU’s CSDDD, which makes companies legally and civilly liable for human rights abuses in their supply chains.
Digital Product Passports: By late 2026, every battery should have a “passport”—a transparent record from the pit to the palm.
The Right to Repair: The most ethical cobalt is the cobalt we don’t have to mine. Demand devices with replaceable batteries to end the cycle of planned obsolescence.

Muntosh didn’t choose the green revolution. He didn’t choose to be a stabilizer for our lithium-ion cathodes. He just wanted to go to school. He just wanted his brother to come home. Every time we ignore the origin of our “clean” energy, we are the ones holding the shovel, piling more red earth on the dreams of children who are dying to keep us powered.
The future isn’t green if it’s built on a graveyard. It’s time we look at the blood on our hands and demand a world where Muntosh can finally put down the sack of ore and pick up his notebook.
