The Commander-in-Chief Versus the Goat

President Benjamin Harrison was a man who took himself very seriously. He was stiff, formal, and possessed all the natural charisma of a Victorian bookshelf. He was certainly not a man built for high-stakes cardio. However, his reputation for icy professionalism was permanently derailed the day he was forced into a public, high-speed footrace against a lawn ornament.
The source of the chaos was Old Whiskers, a pet goat belonging to the President’s grandchildren. Old Whiskers possessed a beard nearly as majestic as Harrison’s and a complete, total lack of respect for the executive branch of government.
The Kidnapping of the Grandkids
One afternoon, while the Harrison grandchildren were being towed around the White House lawn in a small, ornate cart, Old Whiskers decided he was done with the peaceful transition of power. Sensing a lapse in security, the goat bolted through the open gates and onto Pennsylvania Avenue. He wasn't just running away; he was essentially kidnapping the President’s family at a brisk four miles per hour.
The Great Presidential Sprint
Seeing his legacy (and his grandkids) being abducted by a rogue ruminant, Harrison did the only thing a sitting President could do: he dropped his dignity and gave chase.
Imagine being a D.C. pedestrian in 1890 and seeing a goat-driven chariot fly past, followed closely by the President of the United States. Harrison was in full formal attire—silk top hat, frock coat, and cane—sprinting down the street, red-faced and gasping for air while shouting at a goat to stand down. It was a literal "Greatest of All Time" pursuit. Harrison reportedly chased the fugitive for several blocks before finally cornering the animal and reclaiming the cart. It remains the only time in American history that the Commander-in-Chief was tactically outmaneuvered by a creature that regularly eats its own bedding.
